"Oh hi there!" Sally, a short and wiry woman with close-cropped brown hair, grins as Leon enters. Her high-registered voice has a fairly thick English accent. "I can absolutely help you! Let's see what we have here."
She takes the envelope and opens it. Testosterone hormone supplement, to be injected by patient. Huh! No problem. "Okay so I don't have any on hand, but if you come back tomorrow, I'll be able to whip some up. Just gotta get some materials."
Leon keeps up his stony poker face as she reads over the prescription. While most pharmacists he's dealt with in the past have been capable of keeping it professional, there's been enough incidents where he could tell they were getting judgmental that he can't help but brace himself. He relaxes a bit when she speaks, glad to see her take it without question and honestly a little surprised by the answer, eyebrows raised.
"Wow, that soon?" He'd assumed it'd take some doing, getting it settled here, but he's not exactly a student of the history of medicine or how it's made. Could be it's easier to prepare testosterone for injection than he thought. Still, color him impressed. "Uh, thanks. I appreciate it. I guess Chris did say you're kind of a wizard at this stuff. In a less literal way than some of the others around."
"Sure! I already know how to make it, I just have to extract the base molecule from a natural source and perform some basic chemical procedures to alter the molecular structure so that the human body can recognize and process it. I've done it a million times! I just have to ask Cecil if he can cut me off a piece of sweet potato and begin the extraction process. I'll have it done in a jiff," Sally assures him. Damn. She talks fast.
Boy does she ever. Leon catches most of that, even if the 'how' of it goes over his head a little, but the last bit trips him up. He's visibly confused as she finishes.
"...Sweet potato?" he echoes back, unsure if he heard right. If he thought about it a second he might put two and two together with regards to her needing a natural source to extract it from, but as it stands that's a bit of a leap for him to make on his own.
"Yeah! Would you believe that sweet potatoes are a great source of plant-based testosterone? Soybeans are usually a bit better, but they're out of season. So's the yam, but Cecil has a magic one. So long as it's chemically the same as any other potato, it should be peachy."
"I would never have guessed," he says, blinking. "Learn something new every day, I guess. Maybe I should make an effort to eat more sweet potatoes and soybeans."
He's joking, mostly, aware that if you could get any testosterone into your system by eating them that'd probably do more harm than good - there's a reason testosterone pills aren't a thing, as his endocrinologist has told him multiple times.
"What makes Cecil's potato magic, though?" he asks, at risk of falling down a conversational rabbit hole but too curious to possibly let it go without comment.
"It's endless! As soon as he cuts it, more reappears. Rather brilliant--- it got us through the famine over the winter! But it tasted normal. I'll check it, of course, but I'm fairly sure there's nothing untoward about it. Came from a goddess, last I heard." Sally idly works as she continues chatting, evidently grinding some herbs for something or other.
"Man, that sounds handy," he says. "Is there anything that guy can't do? Doesn't he have the weather thing going on, too?"
The mythology of Cecil, the mysterious voice on the radio has been building for Leon for some time now. Time will only tell how meeting him will change that.
"Anyway. Need me to clear out so you can focus? Or do you have time for a couple more questions?"
"The one thing he can't do is be honest about when he needs a break," Sally jokes. But it isn't a joke, not really. "But yes, he does have the weather thing. I think he's got a pretty good relationship with one of the, eh, the goddesses here?" The idea of believing in gods is strange. She hasn't in a long time. But it's hard to debate after having met one.
"Yeah, seems like that's a problem that a lot of people here have. Gotta wonder if that's part of the screening process before getting on the ferry." Leon's no exception to this and in fact only knows that there's other folks around running themselves ragged because he's something of an incurable busybody. It'd kind of make sense as a trait Mortanne and maybe the other three are looking for in people to help out around their island, but like Sally, Leon finds that kinda weird to think too hard about.
So he decides not to! Change of subject.
"Anyway," he continues. "When I was talking to Chris, they brought up that there's also... potions? That can do similar things to testosterone injections. I'm not sure I wanna swap over to that, but I did want to ask you how much you know about them, just in case."
"Right, potions! You'll want to talk to Aeryn Sallek about that. They're a, uh... Oh gosh they told me the word. A genderless person? An elf. They do the alchemy thing," Sally gladly informs him. Seems they're friends, not competitors. "Up High Street and hang a right on Millbank. Can't miss 'em."
Leon's glad to hear that, not wanting to seem ungrateful for the work Sally's putting in on his behalf despite his curiosity.
"Aeryn Sallek," he says. "And they're a they." Easier to commit that kind of thing to memory if he says it out loud, not to mention confirming that he's got the pronunciation right.
"I'll talk to them after this, thanks. Anyway, one last question - d'you or any of the other doctors around have the facilities for running blood labs here? I've been on the same dose for years without problems, but I'd feel better knowing where to go if something starts to feel off."
